Ideally, going from 8.0 to 8.0 (same versions numbers
regardless of which #’s they happen to be *is* best),

8.0 on 98SE computer to 9.0 on XP SP-2 computer:
1.) Run AOL 9.0 a time or two on new computer to
customize it for use with your current AOL SN[s] +
to get any needed updates to software prior to copy
over of your ‘old’ PFCs.
On Windows 98SE + AOL 8.0, PFCs are stored in/as:
C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\Organize\ ‘screenname’
NOTE: only copy SN files with NO file.extensions
For example, my AOL SN is AGM Lite For U and my PFC
would be stored in/as/at:
C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\Organize\agmliteforu
NOTE: If you had more than one copy of AOL 8.0
installed there will be letters appended to subsequent
installation directories with the highest letter (usually)
being the most recently used version of AOL and the
one you will want the screenname file[s] from. You
can burn these ‘screenname’ files to CD or zip + email
them to yourself if small enough [under 16 mbs zipped].
Be advised, that if you do burn to CD, the files *may*
acquire the ‘read only’ file attribute (whenever files are
copied from a CD to HD, they retain the ‘read only’
attribute that CD stored files have). To remove this
once copied over to new location, ‘right-click’ the
file once on HD, select ‘properties’ from context menu,
then UN-check ‘read only (if checked), apply + OK.
The PFC[s] will need to be unzipped or copied over
top of the newly created [customized] ones stored in:
> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize folder.
Reboot XP and then load AOL 9.0 + PFCs *should*
be available to you (*remember* to be sure there
are no ‘read only’ attributes still assigned to same
or they will not be up datable.
General FYI:
Actually, any 9.0 CD also has 7.0 + 8.0 versions on
it, but in ‘hidden’ directories. To view contents of AOL
CD [or XP hard drive) with ‘hidden’ attributes assigned
to folders or files, open ‘My Computer’ icon or:
Start->Run->explorer.exe <.enter> from WinXP start
button to launch “Windows Explorer” for WinXP.
then from the Tools->Folder Options->View [tab], you
can UN-check to hide folders + files with hidden
attributes set and to UN-hide file known extensions.
I’d recommend leaving ‘hidden’ protected system
operating files to be on the safe side.
Insert an AOL 9.0 CD in CD drive (It will immediately
try to install AOL 9.0 . Let it get to the setup screen
and then cancel out of installation (it will plead with
you for a while to allow it to continue installing, LOL).
Once installation has stopped, open the CD drive
and then open the 8.0 folder and you’ll see Setup.
