Here is the fix for this problem. I found a link from some where in this
newsgroup, but I can’t find it again.
I don’t know why this is happening, but after the auto update on 4/14/2005
my system would reboot just before the windows xp login. To get my system
backup I had to use recovery console and run the spuninst batch for this
update. After that my system booted up fine. Here is reference to this fix.

I know it is for windows 2000, but it works for xp too.
Like is said, I’m not sure the reason this is happening, but there are a lot
of people posting this same problem.
I’m running Windows XP SP2 on a Athlon 1ghz.
BTW
The other updates that were installed with this update are giving me
problems too. The main thing I noticed was the TCP/IP stack failed. (No
network access) So I uninstalled them all from Add/remove programs.
