Error: “You have reached the maximum allowed connections to Sage 50 Accounting. Please restart Sage 50 when one of the other users has disconnected.”
Section I: Single User License
- If using a single-user version of Sage 50, the program cannot be installed on a network.
- The Sage 50 data must be located on a local drive of the machine where Sage 50 is actually used.
- To use Sage 50 over a network, upgrade to a multi-user license.
- To purchase a multi-user license, contact Sage 50 sales at 877-495-9904.
Section II: Pervasive running as an application / pre-load on the server
- On the server, locate the icon for Pervasive in the system tray.
- Right-click the icon and select Stop Engines and Exit.
- Click Yes at the confirmation screen that opens.
- Start the Pervasive service. See Article ID 10281 How to stop or start the Pervasive service, in Related Resources.
- Confirm the error no longer occurs.
Section III: Damaged installation of Pervasive
- Uninstall Pervasive, refer to Article ID 10297 How do I manually uninstall Pervasive?, in Related Resources for assistance.
- Run Repair of Sage 50, refer to Article ID 10602 How to run Repair, in Related Resources for instructions.
- Install latest service release, refer to Article ID 10170 How to manually install updates
- If steps 1-3 don’t fix the issue on the workstation then repeat steps 1-3 on the server (or vice versa).
Note: If the error still occurs, and you are working in Sage 50 2014 or above, please contact Sage 50 customer support. For other releases, proceed to next section.
Section IV: Sage 50 SmartPosting service running on non-Quantum release
- A dedicated server will consume a Pervasive license if the SmartPosting service (any version) is running on the server with a non-Quantum version, as only Quantum uses SmartPosting
- In order to correct this issue stop the SmartPosting service on the server; refer to Article ID 10255 How do I start, stop, or disable the SmartPosting service?, in Related Resources
- This may also be caused by SmartPosting running on a workstation on either Quantum or non-Quantum versions, as the SmartPosting service should only run on the server
Section V: Damaged installation of Sage 50
- Uninstall Sage 50, refer to Article ID 10169 (How to manually remove the program) in the Related Resources section for assistance.
- Uninstall Pervasive.
- Reinstall Sage 50.
- Verify Sage 50 opens successfully without errors.
Section VI: Expired Anti virus
- Update your Anti virus subscription or uninstall the Anti virus.
- Verify you can open Sage 50 without errors.
Section VII: Missing most recent Service Release
- Install the most recent Service Release, refer to Article ID 10328 How do I download and install a service release?, in Related Resources.
- Verify you can open Sage 50 without errors.
Section VIII: Incorrect permissions
- On the server share, ensure that both the Sharing and Security tabs have the users Everyone and System. Both will also have to be set to full control, refer to Article ID 10211 Verify my data file permissions are correctly set, in Related Resources.
- Verify you can open your Sage 50 and company without errors.
Section IX: Locked files in your data path or company directory
- Stop and then Start Pervasive on the server, refer to Article ID 10281 How to stop or start the Pervasive service, in Related Resources.
- Browse to your data path, refer to Article ID 10165 How to find data path and program path, in Related Resources.
- Delete any .lck, .tmp or .ptl files.
- Browse to your company directory, refer to Article ID 10199 How to locate company directories, in Related Resources.
- Delete any .lck, .tmp or .ptl files.
- May need to reboot all workstations that are currently using Sage 50.
- Open Sage 50 on the server and confirm it opens without errors and activates.
- Open Sage 50 on the workstations and confirm they open without errors.
Section X: Communication issues with the server
- Follow Article Id ID 29735 Error “Sage 50 cannot be started…” and I am unable to ping my server by name, in Related Resources.
- Verify you can open Sage 50 without errors.
Section XI: Locked Sage 50 on a workstation
- Remove multiple copies of Sage running in the background. Follow Article Id 12364 How do I close the program with the Windows Task Manager

- Browse to your data path, refer to Article ID 10165 How to find data path and program path, in Related Resources.
- Delete any .lck, .tmp or .ptl files.
