How Do I Load Windows on Apple?

  • Overview

The two most popular operating systems on computers, Windows and Mac OS X, have competed for years. The differences always went deeper than just software, though, as Windows would not work on Apple’s hardware. That changed in the mid-2000s when Apple started using Intel chips in their machines. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, it is now relatively easy. The only thing you need to make sure is that your Mac has Intel chips, as the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and Xserve do.

Step 1

  • Make sure your copy of OS X is updated. Click on the apple in the upper corner and click “Software Update.” Install any updates. Close all programs and then open a finder window.
  • Step 2

Click on “Applications,” then “Utilities,” and then double-click on “Boot Camp Assistant.” Click “Continue” on the first window.
  • Step 3

Choose how much space you want Windows to have. This depends on how many Windows programs you want to install. At least 10 gigabytes is preferable. Change the amount of space by clicking and dragging in between the two boxes that are shown (one has a Mac logo and the other has a Windows logo). Click “Partition.” This will create a separate space on your hard drive called BOOTCAMP.
  • Step 4

Insert the Windows install disk after the partitioning has finished. In the window that appears, click “Start Installation.” Your computer will reboot and automatically go into the Windows installation process.
  • Step 5

Select the partition called “BOOTCAMP” when the window appears asking you where to install Windows. Click “Format,” and then click “OK” on the next window. When the installation ends, remove the installation disk and the computer will restart. It will boot into Windows.
